28-04-2009 NUTS PubQuiz
Did you know mussels can live for hundred years? Of which area is HOH-OHO the post code? Yes, friday April 24th was the fifth edition of the famous NUTS pub quiz. It was the first time in our new home at Drieburg. It was also a city league night so we had some Crunchy friends participating. With Monkey Quizzness arriving late, there were nine teams in the race for the Pub Quiz Trophy and a bottle of champagne.
The quiz consisted of familiar rounds like the NUTS round (with really difficult questions according to the Crunchy team Onno?s Delight) and some new themes like Nostaligia (is the hairy one Barbaborre, Barbabenno or Barbabob, who by the way is not from Minnesota?) and Timeline (did you know the first episode of Sex and the City dated from 1998?). As usual the 100 questions took a while, especially with a new element implemented in the second half of the quiz: the team with most correct answers in a round could pick another team and send them to the bar for a drink. Those who weren't sent to the bar for shots could go there as well for free beer.
Winners were Super 7, because of their incredible knowledge of Gaelic sports and Irish geography, and probably also because of their number. Monkey Quizzness became last and won moustaches to pretend not to be the loser.
As quiz master I had a lot of fun seeing everybody thinking, guessing and digging in their memory ('I knew this, I think') and reading all the creative answers: in ultimate 'mac' stands for 'make another catch'. Thanks everyone.

| 09-04-2009 Competition Day 1
On Sunday April 5, a NUTS delegation hopped on a train to Leiden for the first competition day. This year we start in the 5th division, but we have a Grand Plan to move on up to the 4th division. (Can't tell you any more about it -- totally secret, etc.) The delegation was: Brit, Elgin, Hilco, Lisa, Nick, Sugar, Suzanne, Umberto. Unfortunately poor Brit had to quit after the first point due to a darn shin splints injury. So we played savage during the two games.. way die hard.
The first game was against Panic, a team much bigger than ours with some experienced players, but also some total newbees (as in: never played a game of ultimate before). They managed to put on some real pressure. I think we had a bit more experience on our team and structure on the field, but we also made many mistakes. We were ahead, they were ahead, we had to work really hard to come back and finally won the game by a few points (I wanna say 12-9 ish, but I'm not sure)..
Our fellow Amsterdam team in the 5th division, the Crunching Tigers, was our next opponent. They had only one sub, so they too were struggling with shortage of oxygen every once and a while. However this was only their first game, so they had a small advantage there. Similar to our game against Panic, we probably had a bit more experience on the team, but made many mistakes and the Tigers knew how to take advantage of that very well. They took us to half time and despite our mission to come back, we didn't quite manage to do so. When time was called the score was 12-11 to the Tigers. With a two point cap, the first team to reach 14 would win.. This resulted in a very tense finale of the game. The Tigers scored another point.. 13-11. Then NUTS decided to not let them score another point. We scored three points in a row and manage to win the game. Phew! Lots of excitement. The Tigers cheered for us, we clicked for them and did a Mark pile.
After our games, we enjoyed the sunshine and chilled at the fields. We grabbed some ice cream in Leiden center to celebrate our victories. The Grand Plan is working so far! Stay tuned for Competition Day 2!
| 01-04-2009 City League
It's that time of the year,
when flowers start growing,
birds are singing and blossoms are showing,
It means that Spring City League is near.
I won't continue in rhyme I'm afraid, but yes, it's time for City League! This is a local league with about 6 teams composed of players from (around) Amsterdam. These teams play each other 6 Fridays in a row and battle for the City League Cup. Sign up is individual.
Experience is not required! In fact, this League has both inexperienced and experienced players. The goal of the League is to have inexperienced players learn from their more experienced teammates. Shortly before the League starts, the organization will announce the teams they have put together. This wicked event is organized by Crunch only twice a year. And it's just your luck that one of those times is NOW!
